Carl William Marquis,
III
January 26, 1958 - March 4, 2003
Carl "Poppy" William Marquis, III - born to
Carl W. Jr. and Mildred Laverne Marquis on January 26, 1958
in Harlem hospital, Harlem, NY. A beautiful boy, Carl grew
into a handsome teen who was not only popular with the ladies,
he became known for his talents on the city basketball courts
as well. He gained a reputation for himself that was challenged
by many, but outdone, by few. In 1978 he joined the Army, and
there, proceeded to make a name for himself as one of the best "31Mikes" in
the unit. He was a troubleshooter that never missed his mark.
Moving thru his military career, Carl achieved the rank of
PFC/E3 and made the choice to leave the military life and join
the civilian sector again. Completing his degree thru Royal
Business School in Queens, NY he accepted a position with the
Dept of Corrections, NYC as a bid coordinator. In 1984, he
married Anita Middleton, his love of 5 years. They formed a
family with Cherise, and the 3 soon embarked on a new lifestyle
when Anita reenlisted in the Army. Carl and his family would
travel to Washington state where he would make many friends
there, touching each life as only he could. In 1988, the family
moved to Dexheim Germany, where they would live for the next
4 1/2 years. During his time there, Carl would work with the
Civilian Personnel Office of the Army as a Warehouse specialist
in Bad Krueznach, Germany. Carl, Anita, and Cherise returned
to the states in 1991 and found themselves living once again
in Tacoma, WA. There Carl would join the CPO team on base at
McChord AFB where he would assist in the operations of the
base commissary, earning award after award for first employee
of the month, then of the quarter, and eventually of the year.
His presence there was as prominent as any 7 foot tree, though
this man stood 5'8". Carl and his family would leave Tacoma
in 1995 to come back to the east coast where he would join
the team at E. Sam Jones Distribution Co,in Atlanta, GA. There,
8 years later he would become the warehouse manager. In April
of 2001, Carl accepted God as his Lord and saviour Jesus Christ.
Carl touched so many lives in so many ways, that there will
never be enough time to miss him properly. This man and his
love of life, people, music, and his family made him one of
the most respected men known in his circle of acquaintances.
There was no job too big, and no one too small for him to reach
out to. On March 3, 2003 - Carl left E. Sam Jones for the last
time, waving goodbye, and asking someone to lock up behind
him. With his ever known "black bag", he went home,
where he would spend his last evening, emailing friends, and
calling family. At 2:12AM God called his name, and he answered.
He leaves his smile on the lives of his wife, Anita, his daughter
Cherise, and grandson Kory. His mother, Mildred Marquis, his
brother David and wife Patricia, his father and mother in law
- Manny and Ginny Middleton, several brother and sister in
laws, a host of cousins, aunts, and uncles, his God brother
Tom and his wife Marissa, his God son Tom Jr., 5 nieces, 4
nephews, and too many friends to count. Rest, love of my life.
You are so much a part of me, that you will be here until I
am gone. I miss you, we miss you. We love you, and cherish
you deeply. The words of one of your favorite songs says..."I'd
rather be with you", and I know you would if you could.
Always - In love shall we think of you. Your wife and family.

Mom, You taught me many things in life. You gave
me the love for medicine and helping others....although your
dinner
stories were often painful at the time. :-) You taught me to
reach for your dream and to persevere in the face of all obstacles....a
trait I've had to rely on more than I'd like to admit. You
taught me to be strong, a leader, a mom. You gave everything
for me and always put my needs first, teaching me how to be
a good mom to Lissa. You were also a incredible grammy. Please
take care of Missy since she is now with you. I love you Mommy.
